Art gallery theorems for guarded guards
نویسندگان
چکیده
We prove two art gallery theorems in which the guards must guard one another in addition to the gallery. A set G of points (the guards) in a simple closed polygon (the art gallery) is a guarded guard set provided (i) every point in the polygon is visible to some point in G; and (ii) every point in G is visible to some other point in G. We prove that a polygon with n sides always has a guarded guard set of cardinality (3n− 1)/7 and that this bound is sharp (n 5); our result corrects an erroneous formula in the literature. We also use a coloring argument to give an entirely new proof that the corresponding sharp function for orthogonal polygons is n/3 for n 6; this result was originally established by induction by Hernández-Peñalver. 2003 Elsevier B.V. Guarding Art Galleries: The Extra Cost for Sculptures Is Linear
Art gallery problems are, broadly speaking, the study of the relation between the shapes of regions in the plane and the number of points needed to guard them. These problems have been extensively studied over the last decade and have found different type of applications in practical situation. Normally the number of sides of a polygon or the general shape of the polygon is used as a measure of...
متن کاملIrrational Guards are Sometimes Needed
In this paper we study the art gallery problem, which is one of the fundamental problems in computational geometry. The objective is to place a minimum number of guards inside a simple polygon so that the guards together can see the whole polygon. We say that a guard at position x sees a point y if the line segment xy is contained in the polygon. Despite an extensive study of the art gallery pr...

In the Art Gallery problem, given is a polygonal gallery and the goal is to guard the gallery’s interior or walls with a number of guards that must be placed strategically in the interior, on walls or on corners of the gallery. Here we consider a more realistic version: exhibits now have size and may have different costs. Moreover the meaning of guarding is relaxed: we use a new concept, that o...

متن کاملHow to Place Efficiently Guards and Paintings in an Art Gallery
In the art gallery problem the goal is to place guards (as few as possible) in a polygon so that a maximal area of the polygon is covered. We address here a closely related problem: how to place paintings and guards in an art gallery so that the total value of guarded paintings is a maximum. More formally, a simple polygon is given along with a set of paintings. Each painting, has a length and ...
